Read to Succeed Reminder

Winter break would be a great time to do some extra reading. Remember that any reading done outside of school can be counted in the Read to Succeed incentive.

Room 302 is participating in an exciting program that encourages students to read for fun.  Read to Succeed is a free program sponsored by Six Flags Theme Parks.  Every student who completes six hours of recreational reading by Friday, February 24, 2017 is eligible for a free admission ticket. Please note that each student is only able to earn one ticket.

Student Reading Logs were sent home with students Friday, November 4.  Please have your student record their reading and return the completed and initialed log to school by Friday, February 24.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Happy Reading!

Winter Break Homework Assignment Reminder

We will be starting a new inquiry unit after the winter break.  To help prepare for the new unit, students are being asked to think about something that makes your life/your family's life easier. Some examples might be:  TV, car, microwave, air conditioning, cell phones, computer, tablet.  After choosing an item, students should "research" how the item has made life easier.  This research should NOT include books or articles, but rather conversations and observations. Students are encouraged to interview others such as parents or grandparents about how this item has impacted their life.  They might compare what their life was like without this item to how it is now with the item.  A few students mentioned that over break they would try to go a day or two without using that item. Students should jot down a few notes about what they learned and be ready to discuss their findings with the class when we return to school on Tuesday, January 3rd.

This activity is not meant to take tons of time or be stressful. Please contact Mrs. Wilke if you have any questions.

MAP Testing

MAP testing will continue after the winter break. We will begin the reading portion on Wednesday, January 4 and continue on Thursday, January 5. Please help by making sure your student gets plenty of sleep and eats a good breakfast on testing days.

Bingo with Our Buddies

All-School Holiday Sing

We enjoyed singing a few holiday songs with the entire school.

Yes, He Made It Across!

After a few suspenseful moments, the Gingerbread Babies made it safely across the river!

Will the Gingerbread Baby Make it Safely Across the River?

The student engineers in room 302 designed and built bridges to help the Gingerbread Baby make it safely across the river.

Which Candy Canes Arrived at the North Pole Without Breakage?

The excitement mounted as students opened up their packages to see which candy canes arrived at their destination without any breakage.

The "Mailing"

We "mailed" our candy canes to the North Pole after lunch.  I am happy to report that many of our packages arrived safely at their destination with no breakage. After the mailing, students analyzed the results and wrote about how they would design their package differently if they were to do this again.

Survive Alive - Grade 4

All 4th graders should have brought home a permission slip for our field trip to the Survive Alive House on Thursday, January 26th.  Permission slips must be returned to school by Friday, January 12th.  This trip is for 4th graders only.

Candy Cane Calamity

Today's task was to prevent a candy cane calamity. Students worked in teams of three to design and build a package/container using the given materials to safely "mail" two candy canes to the North Pole without breakage.
