Cold Weather

It seems that winter has returned. This is a reminder that students will be outside before school and for lunch recess whenever the temperature is 10 degrees or above. Please make sure your student is dressed appropriately for the weather.

Groundhog Mystery

The mathematicians in room 302 are also using their detective skills. The groundhog has been kidnapped and we are using our math skills to get clues and narrow down the list of suspects. We are working hard to solve the mystery and find the groundhog before Groundhog Day or spring may never get here!

Digital Books

Students began creating digital books about the Industrial Revolution today. We focused on using multiple text boxes on each page so that the page layouts can be edited.

Cause and Effect

After a mini-lesson about cause and effect, students worked to complete cause and effect puzzles about the Industrial Revolution.  The activity allowed for discussion and opportunities for students to support their answers with reasons.  We also practiced the test taking skills of process of elimination and selecting the best answer when there is more than one answer that is correct.

Industrial Revolution Inventions

Today students read short articles about different inventions of the Industrial Revolution.  They thought about the larger field that the invention impacted and summarized the invention.  The next step is for students to rank each invention as to its importance and impact.

Image Analysis

Room 302 researchers continued to deepen their understanding of the Industrial Revolution today. They worked in groups to analyze primary source images about child labor during the Industrial Revolution.  They used the details in the images and their background of the Industrial Revolution to respond to questions. They also ranked the images, chose the one they thought was the most powerful, and explained why.

Informational Books

Students are completing their Industrial Revolution research and using their notes to draft informational books. We are thinking about nonfiction features to include that will help teach the reader about our subtopics.

Research Groups

Students in room 302 are reading like historians to gather information about their self-selected Industrial Revolution subtopics. They are taking notes using boxes and bullets. The notes will be used to write an informational piece about the Industrial Revolution.

Citing Text Evidence

Today we had a mini-lesson about citing text evidence when answering questions about a text. Students re-read an article about the Industrial Revolution and responded to questions about the article. In their responses, students included text evidence to support their answer. We also reviewed using quotation marks correctly.

Spelling Bee

Congratulations to Emma, James, and Amaryssaia who represented room 302 in the Wilson Spelling Bee.  We are very proud of their accomplishments. And a special congratulations to our first place winner, Amaryssia,  who will be representing Wilson at the District Spelling Bee.

Word Study

Students are studying Greek and Latin roots as part of our literacy rotations. They are using the roots along with prefixes and suffixes to determine the meaning of new words.  This week's root is 'chron.' Ask your students what it means and to give you some examples of words with that root in.
