Ronald McDonald House

Congratulations, Wilson! Team Believe has well exceeded our original goal of 8 pounds of pop tabs. Thank you to everyone who contributed. We saw how everyone working together can quickly add up. You are encouraged to continue to bring in pop tabs. Team Believe teachers will be dropping off all the tabs collected so far at the Ronald McDonald House early next week. We will continue to collect tabs for the remainder of the year and deliver them to the Ronald McDonald House.

Pop Tabs

Thank you to Jordan for his generous donation of pop tabs. Thanks to him and many other students, Team Believe has already surpassed our goal. We will continue to collect tabs for the rest of this week for delivery to the Ronald McDonald House next week, but students are encouraged to continue to collect tabs and bring them to school for the rest of the school year. Team Believe teachers will continue to deliver tabs to the Ronald McDonald House.

American Revolution Writing

The writers in room 302 have been busy learning and writing about the events leading up to the American Revolution. We learned that writers have a vision of what they would like their final writing piece to look like before they begin writing.  We looked closely at the work another 4th grade writer did and asked ourselves what we would need to do to be ready to write like that. Most students have finished writing the draft of the first chapter of their American Revolution books which is an overview of the American Revolution. They will begin writing a chapter about their focus topic next.

Happy Birthday, George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr.

Did you know that February 14th is the annual observance of National Ferris Wheel Day? This unofficial national holiday is held on this day to honor the birth of the inventor of the Ferris Wheel, George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr. Please ask your student to tell you the story of George Ferris. In honor of his birthday, we read the book Mr. Ferris and His Wheel and then completed a STEM activity.

The Problem Investigators worked together in 'construction teams' to plan and build a Ferris Wheel. They relied on their skills of problem solving, planning, perseverance, patience, and presentation as they engineered their Ferris Wheels.

We know ways to play because it helps us learn!

Constructed Response Court

Students have been learning how to write a strong constructed response.  Please ask your student what ACES stands for.  Today, students worked in collaborative groups to "perform" a Reader's Theater about a student who has been accused of failing to writing an effective constructed response! After their "performances," students used their knowledge of writing a constructed response and inferring the meaning of figurative language, particularly metaphors, in poetry.

Please Continue to Save Pop Tabs

Team Believe is helping to SPREAD KINDNESS by working on a very special project for the Ronald McDonald House for the month of February (and maybe beyond)!

All of the tabs that are collected will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House to help fund the house which provides a welcoming place for families to stay when a family member is receiving care at a local hospital.

Our school goal is to collect 8 lbs or about 11,250 tabs this month. You will see our GOAL THERMOMETER located in the gym. The 4/5 students will be weighing the tabs every week.

Also, 4/5 students will be coming around EVERY MORNING to collect tabs from classrooms. There will also be a Ronald McDonald collection house located in the gym during the lunch hours.

PLEASE HELP US FILL THE HOUSE for the month of February!

Boston Tea Party STEAM

Today we combined science and social studies. Students are working in collaborative teams to design a water-tight container that could be used to keep tea dry when the container is dumped in a tub of water. One of the constraints is that they are only able to use materials that would have been available at the time of the Boston Tea Party. Today's task was for each team to make a sketch of their design. Our next step will be to begin building and testing our designs.

Dear Families,
Welcome to the Six Flags® Read to Succeed Six Hour Reading Club!
Your child’s school is participating in an exciting program that encourages students in grades
K through 6 to read for fun. Read to Succeed is a free program sponsored by Six Flags Theme Parks. Every student who completes six hours of recreational reading before the school’s deadline listed on the bottom of this page is eligible for a free admission ticket, valid at the participating Six Flags Theme Park that the school has selected.
Students will develop a greater appreciation for books when they see that you think reading is important too. You are sure to have fun as you investigate the world of reading together!
Here’s what you need to know:

Only students in grades K through 6 are eligible to participate.
Review the attached reading log. Your child should use this reading log to record what and how long he/she reads.
Your child must complete 6 hours, or 360 minutes, of recreational reading.
Please initial each entry and then sign the reading log to verify that the 6 hours of reading has been
completed.
Students can read silently, aloud, or with an adult—you can read to your child, or your child can read to you.
Remind your child to return the reading log to his/her teacher by the due date. Your child’s school will submit your child’s information and hours read.
Late entries will NOT be accepted.

About the Tickets
Tickets will be awarded to students by their teacher/school coordinator in May.
The ticket is valid for admission to ONE Six Flags theme park on SELECT DATES ONLY during the 2018 season. Park name and valid dates will be printed on the tickets. Please understand that the school can only select one Six Flags Theme Park. The ticket will only be valid for the park that is listed on the ticket. The valid dates will not be announced prior to the ticket award date in early May.
Tickets are valid for students in grades K-6 only and are not valid for anyone over the age of 13. No exceptions. Each ticket is valid for one free student admission only.
A Season Pass upgrade offer will be available during the ticket valid dates. The upgrade offer information will be printed on the ticket. Tickets are NOT for resale and are nontransferable.
They cannot be replaced if lost, stolen or damaged.

We hope that you and your child enjoy this free program and spend time reading together. If you have any questions about the program or have ticket questions, you will need to contact your child’s teacher or school before the school year is over.
Happy Reading!

Word Detectives

Word detectives were hard at work today using context clues to determine the meaning of new words. After a lesson about five different types of context clues (definition, synonym, antonym, examples, and inference), students set off around the room to read task cards and determine the meaning of bolded words.
