Internal and External Quests

Today in reading workshop we analyzed the plot of fantasy stories. Readers learned that experienced fantasy readers know that most fantasy stories follow a quest structure and investigate both the internal and external quests. Book talk partners shared the quests of the main characters of their book.

Bag Lunches on Friday

High Interest Day is on Friday.  Only bag lunches will be served for lunch.

Capable Camels

The scientists in room 302 are exploring animal adaptations.  Today we read about camels and learned what physical adaptations they have to help them survive in the desert. We ended the day by making a lift-the-flap book highlighting the different camel adaptations.

Here Be Dragons!

Today's reading mini-lesson was about identifying the "dragons" in a story.  Readers learned that in fantasy stories, characters face different kinds of dragons--some literal, while others are metaphorical dragons symbolizing conflicts faced by those characters.  Experienced readers look for these conflicts, and consider whether some of them are becoming themes in their novels.  Then, independent reading time was spent searching for "dragons" in our books.

Book Talks

Students met with their reading partner to review what is happening in their fantasy books after the long spring break.

Spring Break

Enjoy Spring Break!  I look forward to students returning to school on Monday, April 24 ready to learn!

The Quest Continues

Mathematicians are working diligently to complete the math quest and return the golden egg before spring break begins!

The Launch

After creating their bunny copters, the designers in room 302 were ready to launch them to see which designs would spiral down slowly.

Bunny Copters

In this activity, students created a helicopter similar to the seeds of maple trees that spiral down slowly when dropped. They experimented with variations on their copter to see how those variations affect how well the copter works.

Spring Break Bingo

Spring Break BINGO sheets were given to Team Believe students yesterday.
In order to receive a prize for Spring Break BINGO, students will need to bring back "evidence" of completion.  Each box completed will also need an adult's initials in the box.  You may receive BINGO by getting four in a row diagonally, horizontally, or vertically.

Survey

The surveyors in room 302 have been busy gathering data. They surveyed the third and fourth grade classrooms to find out which Peep the students preferred. There are two classrooms that still need to be surveyed before we can tally the results.

Book Fair

Tomorrow is the last day of the buy one, get one Scholastic Book Fair. Students visited the fair yesterday and completed their wish lists.

Returning to Wilson Slips

All 4th graders received a "Returning to Wilson" letter. We are currently in the process of planning for next school year and need to know the number of students that will be attending Wilson. Please complete the slip and return it to school.  Thank you.

Scientific Method

Scientists in room 302 are busy learning about the scientific method.  We completed the first trial of a Skittles experiment today. Your scientist should be able to explain to you what the independent variable, dependent variable, controls are for this experiment.

Math Quest

Today we began a math quest, Raiders of the Lost Egg, to review the math skills we have been learning.  Students are working through six different chapters, leading to four possible endings as they help the bunny on an adventure to get his Gold Egg back. Today's chapter required students to compare fractions and decimals.
