Figurative Language and Poetry

As part of our poetry unit we have been learning about figurative language.  Today, students traveled around the room identifying different types of figurative language used in sentences. The types of figurative language included simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification, onomatopoeia, and alliteration.

Poem In Your Pocket Day

Happy Poem In Your Pocket Day!

National Poem in Your Pocket Day is observed each April. This day was created to share the joy that poems bring by carrying one in your pocket and sharing it throughout the day with others.

As part of New York City's celebration of National Poetry Month, residents have participated in Poem in Your Pocket Day since 2002. Now the movement has gone national!

The students in room 302 have selected a poem or composed an original one and will be carrying it in their pockets all day today to share with others.

We have also put a supply of pocket poems outside of room 302 for other students to take, carry in their pocket, and share with others to enjoy the fun of Poem In Your Pocket Day!

Measurement

If you think about it, we measure almost everything: time, distance, weight, volume, etc. Every THING can be measured. The question is, what unit of measurement is used and how is that unit constructed, compared, and converted? The students in room 302 have been exploring these questions, specifically focusing on linear measurement.

Quotes of Note

There is a new bulletin board outside room 302. Students were excited to return from spring break and be greeted by quotes from famous Americans. They have sparked great discussions about working hard and the meaning of success, and more.

Lever Investigation

Scientists in room 302 began an investigation about levers yesterday. After a mini-lesson about reading like a scientist, they worked in pairs to complete the investigation, gathering data about first class, second class, and third class levers. Next, we will analyze the data and determine which lever was the most effective at lifting a load.

Fish Is Fish

Today we continued to analyze perspective. Students worked with a partner to read Fish Is Fish by Leo Lionni and then answered the question, "Which character, Fish or Frog has a more positive perspective of life and why?" by writing a constructed response. In their responses, students cited text evidence and practiced using quotation marks correctly.
