Connect the New to the Known

Connecting what we know to new information helps us to make sense of what we read and gives us deeper insight into the topic.  As we read a nonfiction text about simple machines today, students thought about what they already knew about simple machines, their background knowledge, to better understand the new information in the article.  Students 'tracked' their thinking as they read using text codes.
